It has been one of those days.

You know the kind where you only got three hours of sleep and have a million things to do?

Yeah.

It's on days like these I wish I had some super strong coffee. The kind of coffee you can find in Bosnia, puddled in miniature espresso cups. And so, I stare at this picture and dream about drinking bosanski kafe at Tito's in Sarajevo.

i recently found an application that allows you to convert photos into tilt-shift images. i think it's a pretty neat application, but it reminded me of my current state in life. only a small, little slit of my life is in focus right now. i know i'm in school, that i have assignments to finish and a graduation in thirteen weeks. and that's about it. my future is one big blur. i can see outlines of what's in store, but i have no concrete ideas. (but i suppose that's what i get for electing a gap year between my undergraduate and a possible master's program.) ayn rand once said, "People create their own questions because they are afraid to look straight. All you have to do is look straight and see the road, and when you see it, don't sit looking at it - walk."

i may not be able to see exactly what surrounds me, but at least i can see the road. and so, i'm (attempting) to embrace this new journey.

And I'm in my last semester of undergraduate!
And I will be turning twenty-three in exactly one month.
And today, I completed my very first watercolor painting ever! I love photography and admiring art (especially paintings), but I never envisioned myself as the painter; I have taken kreative to a whole new level!

At the end of each year, I like to go through all of my pictures and select one that represents the entire year. It's awfully hard (given the sheer number of photos I take), but it's a good exercise. Looking back at photographs is like opening an old journal. And so, I present to you, the following photo:

To me, this photo represents a place that has affected where I'm headed in life, but also a place that altered my perception of people.

People. I didn't time this shot, nor do I know the lady looking back at me. But trams in Eastern Europe taught me a lot about people and what they are going through. I loved the trams, despite their stench and the gypsies, because it allowed me to get a brief glimpse of the people who make Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. You can read a million books on a particular people, but until you see their faces, you do not really understand them, because a simple look can tell a story. Trams (or any mode of transportation such as a train, subway, etc) are brief and temporary. People get on and then get off before you have a chance to blink. 2011 was all about making the most of friendships. It was about reconnecting with old friends, as well as making some new ones. I have come to realize that life isn't all about work or blazing a trail that will radically change the world. Rather, it's a balance.

2012 is shaping up to be a very different year. I'm looking forward to all the places I'll go, the photos I'll capture and the people I'll meet. (And hopefully, I'll get better at blogging about if all!)

{11/17} of transitions.

Last night, I had a dream that my Fulbright Grant was approved and I was hours away from boarding a plane to Bosnia. I was teary as I hugged family and friends, nervous about the life that awaited me. I woke up with a start, disappointed only to realize that I was still stuck in this snowy state. But it got me thinking.

There are some major changes coming my way. A possible trans-Atlantic move or a relocation to New York or DC looms on the horizon. Add a graduation to the pile, and my life is full of transitions.

But I have this fear. Until today, I thought it was a fear of actually going away from home for longer than two months. However, seeing the world and living elsewhere has always been a life-long dream; I am not afraid to see and experience things.

This afternoon, in the hallway, I saw a professor I've worked with in the past. We chatted for a few minutes and before he left, he asked when I was graduating. I replied, but It was his response that really got me and revealed the root of my fear. "Wow," he said, "be sure to stay in touch." And that's when it me. I'm leaving my professors, these classrooms and the books. In a way, it seems that my identity as a student was leaving me as well. But is that really true?

Being a student is my identity, it's who I am. Writing research papers, conducting statistical analysis, critiquing papers and debating with my colleagues is what I do best. It's an identity I have developed over the last four years and one that I am reluctant to give up. But I'm realizing that my identity as a student really won't change on April 29, 2012. The classrooms will. I won't have the same professors. My classmates won't consist of the same individuals. But the learning never stops. The books I have read and the relationships I have established thus far only enable me to be a better student in the future.

So I say, bring it on. There's nothing bittersweet about graduating, only the happy thoughts of a limitless classroom at my doorstep.

(Oh, and I can't wait to reread this someday, when I'm forty and grading a stack of papers. I only hope I'll have the same optimism and enthusiasm for life.)

wednesdays are usually my favorite.

i get to do statistics all morning.

and then meet with a favorite professor to discuss and debate such topics like the European Union, immigration policy, migration, foreign languages and loads of other wonderful things. truth is, i love academia. and i love where it’s taking me.

but today was different. my professor is more like a mentor; she pushes me in my weak areas and makes me an academically stronger person. i am eternally grateful for her advice. but we talked about the future for the umpteenth time today. “you have lots of options, choices and decisions.” and that’s when the blanket of doom and despair descended.

pushing the heavy wooden doors out into the open air, i was greeted with a rush of cold air. it was overwhelming, just like the decisions i have to make. all of the applications i must fill out and the essays i must write. it can be very trying at times.

and so as i drove back home, i rolled down my window and hollered out to nobody and everybody. the wind carried my cries across the crimson tree line and up into the endless gray sky. i’m sure someone thought i was crazy, but it felt good. did it remedy my situation? did my decisions magically morph? nope. but it felt good. and maybe the occasional scream is keeping me sane. it’s tough, you know, making a transition to the RealWorld after eighteen years of school.

I've mentioned some cryptic things in tweets and recent posts, so I figured I'd share some recent developments in my life.

I applied for a Fulbright scholarship to return to Bosnia-Herzegovina. I'd be gone for a year, which seems so daunting, yet exciting.
Did you know that statistics is wonderful? And I do not mean that sarcastically at all. I am head over heels in love with plugging the numbers into formulas and calculating things. Coolest part? As a sociologist, I get to conduct the research to get the numbers. Then I can to play with them. It's like the numbers are silly-putty and I love silly putty, so it's a win.
The Sociology Club elected me as President! In two weeks, I get to stand in front of my peers. And talk. About sociology. And my work. That just sounds so dignified and I feel so under-qualified.
My brother has been home since last Monday! Just to clarify: MarineBrother1 is over in Afghanland (though with this latest offensive our military has started, I'm half wondering if he's now in Pakistan?). MarineBrother2 is halfway through training and completely SURPRISED us all and showed up, bags in tow, last Monday for a two-week stay. Can you say 'happy'?! I'm hoping to blog about deployment from a Big Sister's point of view soon, so stay tuned!
I'm a wedding two days after Christmas! As the maid of honor, I understand that I'm supposed to be on top of a bunch of things, but alas, I am failing. The bride-to-be texted me last night to remind me of a dress fitting this evening. And it's a good thing she did - I had forgotten about it. What would a maid of honor do without a bride?!?!?
Also, I know this wonderful blogger (well, we've exchanged a few emails, but I've read her blog for years, so I feel like I know her) named Lore who blogs at Sayable. I've been meaning to do a plug for her blog, but it always escapes me. I'm a bad blogger. Anyways, I figured now would be a wonderful time because she's doing a book giveaway. Hello! What could be better than a book giveaway?! So go enter and then click around. She's a fantastic writer (unlike myself who resorts to bullet points) because she writes about hard, yet real things in life. You won't be disappointed.

All of this paper writing has clearly made me mad, so I better stop!

This pretty lady? I used to babysit her and now she's graduating from high school. I guess I'm gettin' old, eh? Olivia is so sweet and is extremely talented on stage. She has participated in many theatre productions as lead actor and she's planning on pursuing theatre after graduation. Good luck, Olivia! I know you'll be great :)

{10/15} Ch-ch-ch-changes!

In case you couldn't tell, my blog has changed a bit. I've wanted to give my blog a slightly different feel lately, so I ditched the single column. I like it. My blog feels cozy now, if that's even possible. The only problem? Many of my past photos are slightly too big for the column widths. I'm in the process of trying to switch over five years worth of photos, but it's difficult. (And I betcha didn't know I've been blogging here since 2006!) I have temporarily taken down many photo posts as I attempt to fix this, so I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

The future holds many changes for me, some of which I've alluded to on this blog. In addition to photos, I'm hoping to incorporate more of my writing (because in case you didn't know, I am a writer by day). Many of my photoshoots will still appear here; however, I'm hoping to utilize my facebook page more. I'll still post an image or two here, but you will find the images over there.

For now, I'm back to working on the following:

I am nine credits away from graduating (cue confetti) and rather than apply for graduate school immediately, I am looking into other opportunities overseas (more on where I'll be headed will have to wait for another post). So, I'm writing statements on why I want to teach English, why I'd like to travel, and how my upbringing has shaped who I am today.

But while I'm busy writing, I'd like to hear from you (and please don't be shy)! If you were to pick five countries (or cities) to visit, what would they be? And if you feel like it, why'd you pick these places?

Those of you who know me well probably know that I am not a domestic goddess by any stretch of the imagination. Sure I can boil a pot of noodles and make a mean spaghetti sauce or construct a pb&j sandwich, but pies? cakes? main dishes? steaming veggies? No way; cooking has never been my forte. After years of dealing with various health ailments, I finally discovered that I have a gluten and dairy allergy (I have previously messed around with food to see if it'd help with my energy levels). Let's just say these allergies have me in the kitchen for more than ten minutes a day. I have to measure things (did you know that almond flour is expensive?!) and substitute different ingredients. It's like learning how to ride a bicycle with training wheels and then jumping to a unicycle. Not an easy task.

Today's challenge? Peach and blackberry cobbler, courtesy of Roost Blog (and if you suffer from a combination of allergies like I do, check her blog out. It's GREAT. Most blogs are focused to dairy or gluten allergies, but not both.)

Okay, so before you all think school has come on over and killed me already...please know that I am alive and well. And I'm still taking photos. In fact, I'm offering a schweet dealio! If you live within thirty miles of me, you are eligible for this deal. I live halfway between Ann Arbor and Detroit (which are both in the absolutely lovely state of Michigan). For fifty dollars you get a thirty minute shoot with thirty photos. This deal is only valid thru October 11, 2011, so get on it folks! The beginning of the end.

Four years ago, I embarked on this thing called college. I had no idea what it really was. Heck, I could barely understand the difference between a bachelors, masters or a doctorate! Originally, I was supposed to be in music school and aside from a few english and math classes, I expected to live with my flute and piano for the duration of my undergraduate degree. Cough, sputter, choke. That's obviously not what happened; God clearly had other ideas for my life.

For starters, college has taught me that life doesn't always go as planned.

I didn't graduate when I should have. I should have been done this past spring, but my diploma will read 2012. I've just been telling people that I love school that much.

Graduation day aside, when I DO receive my diploma in April, I will be a "sociologist". What's a sociologist? I will commit an academic sin and quote wikipedia:

"It is a social science—a term with which it is sometimes synonymous—which uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop and refine a body of knowledge about human social activity."

Didn't get that? As a sociologist, half of it's blabber to me as well, so don't worry. Essentially, when I walk across the stage at convocation, I'll be a sociologist who is certified in observing people (aka: creepin'), conducting interviews (qualitative sociologists, holla!), surveying the masses (quantitative sociologists, I don't know how you can stand this stuff) and then some. I'll be educated, or something like that. A far cry from music school, no?

But ya know education-schmeducation aside, I've learned some other random, yet valuable, lessons:

Professors make mistakes.
You will forget to submit an assignment (and you will survive).
Class gets canceled every great once in a while.
Three jobs sometimes suck your spare time.
Somehow, you find time for extra curricular activities (like literally running yourself dead by participating in cross-country).
Sometimes you transfer to another school.
You don't receive the grade you thought you deserved.
Your major changes once or twice (or three, four and five times).

The doors I once was scared of are now familiar (I really hate the squeaky doors). That intimidating professor? Yeah, she's writing my letter of recommendation. The borderline psycho professor I swore I'd never see again? Um yeah, about that. She's my boss now. Those unfamiliar faces? We're friends. And today marks the beginning of the end of all that. I didn't expect to encounter any of it, but it happened and now it's going to end soon. And it's bittersweet. College wasn't so scary after all.

I know of a man who lives not too far from me. As a youngster, he towered over me, like the two large oak trees that stood parallel in his yard. Yet he had the gentlest eyes, the kindest smile.

He would stoop down beside me, to the crazy swing, we go, he'd say. And with the shove of his hand, I would glide in crazy circles, round and round.

When we tired of the crazy swing and our eyes fell droopy, he'd gently lift us, to the hammock he'd built by hand, we'd go. Back and forth and back and forth, nodding off into dreamland.

Sunny summer days found us by the water running side by side, chasing the seagulls, casting our fish lines or steering his speed boat and finding money. Splash, splash, was the name I'd give this special place, I told him.

The crazy swing taught me to embrace laughter and freedom, the hammock to appreciate rest, the lake to appreciate nature, but the years have accumulated.

The man, still tall has grown weaker. his breathing labored, his walk a little slower and his voice and laugh a little quieter: was this the man I used to know?

The peak was high, but a winding road beckoned us further. Reaching our destination, we piled out, caught our breath and then scaled a few small hills to reach 14,240 feet in the Colorado Rockies. He had his oxygen tank, but he was still climbing with us. At the top, he took in the beautiful view and I realized...

He was still the same, beneath the age.

As the wind swirled, the years blew before me and I realized it can all be gone in an instant. His health is failing fast, so I try to savor the moments I have with him now. I am so blessed and thankful to call this kind man my Grandpa.

Happy birthday, Grandpa. I love you so very, very much.

I was sitting on a bench in front of several elevators, impatiently waiting for my math professor to call me into her office.

Students were shuffling all about. Some were madly dashing off to class. Others were socializing with friends. That's when I saw her.

She appeared forlorn and weary as she was carrying several bags. She stumbled off the middle elevator and set her bag down on the seat and looked at me, silently pleading for more room.

Inwardly, I sighed. This always happens to me. The bench was definitely big enough for her to sit down and rest, but I was sprawled everywhere and really didn't feel like making room for her. Afterall, there were five other benches nearby. Couldn't she just chose one of those? Couldn't she see that I was stressed out? I nervously flipped my phone around (yes, I sometimes I pretend to text during awkward situations), glancing at her every few seconds. Her dark, piercing eyes and weary face eagerly waited for me to give an answer. Something inside me softened and I moved.

With that over, I contemplated a way to get off the bench. My professor wasn't ready to see me. There was a line for the bathroom and my next class wasn't for several hours. I didn't want to walk down several flights of stairs to find another seat and moving to the other side of the hall would have been insulting. Stuck, I decided to perch my head up, pretending to sleep. She wasn't fooled and there was nothing that could prepare me for what was coming. Not only did this lady want to sit, she wanted to talk. To me. She wanted to talk about real stuff too. She inquired about my major. Where I wanted to go in life. What I planned on doing in the next year. Where I was from. What I enjoyed. This lady wanted the real deal.

Goodness gracious, moving my bag was already a hassle. I was stressed about a math exam and another Arabic quiz later in the afternoon and detailing my life point-by-point wasn't exactly what I wanted to do that moment. I felt a stab of guilt and I inquired about her life. In a rather thick accent, she explained that she was currently obtaining her second bachelor's degree. She loved math and science and English was her third language. Her first two languages? Arabic and French. I tried restraining the rising tide of curiosity, but it was no use. I love France - she lived there for several years. I wanted to study in Lebanon for an extended amount of time - she was born and raised there.

Continuing in a soft voice, she explained the struggle that ensued just to obtain her first degree. In addition, she explained, her Arab origins didn't help when it came to making friends. Americans are too judgmental regarding the Arabs, she reasoned. They have too many stereotypes about us and it makes it hard to develop friendships, she concluded.

My sour attitude melted away. Suddenly I was glad I had given her room to sit down and lent her my ear. We continued chatting for a while longer. Eventually, I glanced at my watch and realized the time: 12:45. Where had the time gone? My professor was waiting and she had to scoot off to a meeting. As she stood up to leave, she grasped my hand. Thank you, she said. I smiled and suddenly, she was gone.

I don't know if I'll ever see her again, but my new friend taught me a bit about life in thirty minutes. Walking down the hall to my professor's office, a million thoughts flooded my mind.

Lilas Trotter once said,

“[The] dandelion has long ago surrendered its golden petals, and has reached its crowing stage of dying – the delicate seed-globe must break up now – it gives and gives till it has nothing left. There is no sense of wrenching: it stands ready, holding up its little life, not knowing when or where or how the wind bloweth where it listeth may carry it away. An introvert at times, I tend to shy away from unfamiliar situations and meeting people. Sometimes it's because I lack the time or I'm simply not interested in developing new relationships. Other times, I'm afraid of getting hurt. But today I realized you can't live like that. Life is about looking for the worn and hurt. For those who need a sympathetic ear. For the men and women who are suffering. For the children who have no friends. Life is about find those people, moving your "stuff" and making room for them.

Musical Mondays

Mondays are generally bad days – it’s always hard to get back into a routine after the weekend. Today hasn't been too terrible, but I have decided that Mondays will henceforth be called Musical Mondays, where I share a song that has really impacted me because music always makes things better.

At any rate, I love Needtobreathe, but I had not heard of this song until Kristen blogged about it. Good stuff.

Moving along. I love days when I randomly open my Bible to a passage that I absolutely needed to read. For the last several weeks, I have encountered some serious health issues and when I randomly opened up to Lamentations 3, I knew God was up to something.

"Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new mevery morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”

I suffer from an unknown autoimmune disease. I have my good days and bad days. On the good days, life is great. But on the bad days (which seem to far outnumber the good days currently), it becomes overbearing. The pain is too much and sometimes I'd rather just fly away to heaven. But I don't have wings and God hasn't called me home yet. These verses reminded me not to place my hope in doctors or medicine, but rather on God who is the ultimate healer.

(If you're new here, I've been blogging about living in Sarajevo, Bosnia this summer. You can read my other posts here.)

Sarajevo is often referred to as the Jerusalem of Eastern Europe. And it's true. The city is littered with mosques and cathedrals, representing Muslims, Orthodox Christians and Catholics. It's not uncommon to have an Orthodox church, a Catholic church and a mosque on the same block (some are even just a few feet from each other). (And just for clarification, over half of the population is Bosniak, which essentially means they are Muslim. Croats are Catholic and Serbs are Orthodox Christians.)

Over the last several thousand years, the Ottomans (later the Turks) have ruled in Sarajevo, as have other western European powers right through the Communist period. Although the number of mosques far outnumber the amount of churches (and I mean churches are really outnumbered), Sarajevo is really a patchwork of each religion.

I have this awesome friend named Katie. Growing up, we lived a block away from each other, had mutual friends but never really were playmates. Fast forward a few years, we meet and the rest is history. You can imagine my happiness when I found out this past February that she had met an awesome guy and was dating; I love it when my friends find that special someone! I was in Bosnia when Drake first visited Michigan (they have a long-distance relationship) so I didn't have a chance to meet him. But he came back a few weeks ago and I was able to snap these shots! He asked Katie's dad for permission to marry her (isn't that THE sweetest?!) and I have a hunch that an engagement is around the corner ;) I'm so excited to see where life takes these two awesome people!

Gasp! My own sister is graduating from high school next year. Am I really that old now?! It's hard to believe that just five years ago I was donning a cap and gown, gearing up for college. But now she's the one entering college as I'm exiting. Weirdness. We went out this weekend to downtown Ann Arbor (our hometown) to get her senior shots started. Isn't she the cutest? It was weird (in a good way) to shoot her. My clients will recognize her because she's my best friend, handy assistant and second shooter, so for her to be in front of the camera was FUN!

The Paul children (that I see everyday of the week) are going to have a well-documented childhood at the rate I snap pictures. They are just too cute though! I recently blogged a newborn shoot I did of their twins and I was over there again and snapped these. They are growing SO fast! Both of them also love holding hands and grabbing each other - it's so sweet. I love watching these kiddos grow up!

Five years.

July 27th marked the fifth anniversary of my becoming ill (for those of you who don't know, I have been battling an unknown, Lupus-like disease). I didn't even remember it was "the day" until after the fact, which makes me happy. For the last five years, I have determined to keep my illness from defining who I was. It may have crushed my dreams as a musician, knocked me off my knees (quite literally) and prevented me from doing so many things I loved dearly, but it never bested me and I have been able to do plenty of normal things. Doctors said I'd never walk again, let alone run (and now I do half marathons and collegiate races). Doctors never thought I'd be able to travel easily, but I have. They weren't sure what psychological or neurological problems I'd suffer from, but God has been extremely gracious. It has been a long road and I know there will be many tough days ahead that may be filled with more doctors exams, needles and maybe even hospitals and that's okay. Back in the darkest, most miserable hours when I initially became ill, God gave me Isaiah 40:31,

...but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

He has faithfully kept that promise. And that's why I can say this illness has been the best thing that ever happened to me. I am extremely stubborn and independent, but this illness stripped me of everything and nearly brought me to my deathbed where I was literally begging God for mercy. And by asking for help, God has given me so much.

I know I will continue to suffer from the same things in the future, but I feel I've turned a corner and can confidently say,

This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

{sarajevo: the food}

Bosnians have amazing food. There's nothing exotic; no bugs, no chicken feet, no snakes. Sorry. But there is bread (hljeb), chicken sandwiches (pileci sandvic), fruit, cevapi (beef and lamb mixed together), bread, nutella, chicken salad (pileci salata), bread, fruit...you get the idea. Bosnians add their own touch to things like pileci salata and sandvic's...things like corn, local-made cheeses, interesting dressings and other things I don't know about (but ate anyways). Bosnian chef's also LOVE mayonnaise, and I do mean l.o.v.e. it. I usually had to wipe half of it just to eat the sandvic. So that's Bosnian food in a nutshell. There's more to it and there are definitely other dishes, I just don't remember names. I also feel that I MUST mention Bosnian coffee. It's very strong and I love it. American coffee just doesn't compare. They drink it all day, everyday and cafe's line the streets an alleys in Sarajevo. You can't escape the coffee, it will always find you.

Also worth noting: Sarajevo just welcomed its first McDonalds. I actually saw the location before they even constructed and I must say, it's so neat to see how it has changed (the last picture above is where the McD's is located now). Furthermore, it's exciting to see Bosnia progress; they are one of the last countries in Europe to get a McD's. Say what you want about capitalism, globalization and American imperialism, but this is huge for Bosnia, especially in the post-war era. A recent news report noted,

"We are becoming a part of western Europe, of a world from which we were cut off," local politician Aner Begic, 32, said as he munched on his meal.

"McDonald's is a symbol of the Western world and I'm thrilled that Bosnia is joining it," he said. Years of isolation brought on by Bosnia's inter-ethnic wars of the early 1990s are slowly easing. International brands are moving in and Bosnians can head out to most EU states since December without a visa, even if this still seems a far-off dream in an impoverished state with 43 percent unemployment."

the cities, the parks, the mountains, the rivers....all of that makes bosnia beautiful. but what i enjoyed most were the people. i enjoyed riding the tram (despite the sweltering heat and sheer number of people on it) because it felt like i got a snapshot of bosnia (and sarajevo, to be exact). and people's faces tell stories no matter where you are. some are serious, others happy, silly... still others looked mournful, sad and melancholy. i felt that even though sarajevo is rebuilding and appears to be "fine" (it IS a beautiful city, so rich in history), it's people told a slightly different story. you can patch mortar holes, paint over graffiti and rebuild things, but you can't remove the hurt and pain that has scarred people from centuries of war and conflict.

Lots of cool things are happening lately. I gonna try and update on everything and answer some questions about my trip.

I'm shooting my first wedding (as in, I'm the head photographer) tomorrow. Up until this evening, I was freaking out (and I mean f.r.e.a.k.i.n.g). I'm not sure who was more stressed, the bride or myself. What if my images look horrid? What if I miss something? Will I look like a dork snapping away?! Thankfully I can make lists so I don't forget things. I know I can take good pictures. And I already look like a dork most of the time, so tomorrow won't be anything new. I also realized that I can't do this on my own...in order to survive the wedding tomorrow, I'm gonna need to rely on God. I'm going to try my hardest and leave the rest of Him. Also, it helps that the bride has an awesome wedding planner!
I am going to start blogging my trip to Bosnia. The posts are going to be different then what I've ever done before. I'm looking to be more photojournalistic, so some photos will have pictures and words while others are simply pictures. I will intermittently be blogging them between other posts, so keep checking back.
Since I'm already on the topic of Bosnia, a lot of people have been asking how I'm doing, what it feels like to be home, etc. And I just have to say, I freaking love America now that I'm back. But I'm also more aware. In Bosnia, I was very conscious of my Americaness (every time I walked past the US Embassy in Sarajevo, I almost always started humming the Star Spangled Banner and I'd talk freaky loud in English) and most people there seemed intrigued about this place I call home. America is awesome, but when I arrived back it was sometimes easy to become agitated and annoyed. Sure we're a rich, powerful nation that exudes much influence around the world and it's easy to become egotistical. As a Christian, I became convicted that my allegiance is to God first and foremost. So, I've become more aware.
Lots of people have also asked about jet lag. Well, not everyone, but some and so why not talk about it. Everyone has a horror story about this kind of stuff, so I'm going to end on a slap-happy note. When I first arrived in Bosnia, I was extremely jet-lagged and oh-so upset. The six hour time change was kicking my rear and all I wanted to do was SLEEP (been up for almost thirty-four hours), but it was only the mid-afternoon and our team leaders had planned a forty-five minute hike to the top of a mountain to keep us awake. At that point, I thought traveling halfway across the world was the worst idea in the history books. We were falling asleep in chairs, the nearest beds...everywhere. In hindsight, the hike was a great idea because the lookout is where I first fell in love with traveling halfway across the world (and it also gave us this awesome photo where our jet lag was documented for all eternity). The moral of the story? Jet lag is horrible, but worth it. So get out there and see the world!

but, it came faster than I thought.

i gripped the phone with my sweaty palms.

a knot formed in my throat.

and then it's time.

i don't want to let go and hang up.

but i have to.

the bus is waiting.

an airplane is nearby, ready to take him across the ocean, to that sandy place.

it's dangerous.

suddenly, war becomes more serious. i thought i had accepted that fact.

but the talk becomes the walk now.

As many of you know, I am headed overseas for six weeks. I am leaving on Sunday and will be traveling to Bosnia with EveryStudent, working students at the university there. I'm excited to travel there and I know I'll have many photos to share when I return!

We were pressed for time, I left my spare memory card at home (and for the first time, ran out of card space) and we were in a location new to me. But Kathryn was a champ! I love this amazing family. The moved to North Carolina just after I took their pictures last year, but they've become such good friends and I've visited them since. I just returned from a trip there and had a very enjoyable time swimming in their pool and playing with the kiddos! Can't wait to see them again.

This Thanksgiving has taken on a completely new meaning for me. My brother finally graduated from Marine boot camp yesterday, after being away since August. He has changed so much (that's probably an understatement), but it's wonderful to see. I am so proud of him!

My other brother, Josh (pictured below in the camo-colored hoodie) also leaves for Marine boot camp in just a few weeks. This thanksgiving, I am so thankful to God that He has blessed me with a wonderful family and that we can spend the holiday together, because we are growing up and being together won't always be possible.

I sincerely apologize for disappearing once again. It seems to be normal for me these days. I'm currently in North Carolina and am headed to South Carolina for my brother's graduation from Marine boot camp.

Fall ended weeks ago in Michigan, but it's in full swing here in the south. LOVE the fact that I'm living through two autumn seasons. North Carolina is absolutely beautiful! I will be sure to share lots of pictures when I return!

I apologize for the lack of posts recently! October is always a busy month for me and I have a hard time keeping up on sleep even! I plan on returning emails, answering questions and posting more photos within the next month or two. Please bear with me!

School has been going wonderfully. I am just finishing up midterms, which is a relief! I'm excited because in 29 days, my brother graduates from boot camp! He was able to call home (rare) the other day because he won an obstacle course competition. He is also a squad leader, which means added responsibility. Although boot camp is very hard, he's doing well!

All 13.1 miles of it (and I did it in 2 hours, 8 minutes)! As many of you know, I run cross country and while I like my 5ks and 6ks, I LOVE running longer distances much better! I'm so excited for my next half (probably in April).

-We saw my brother off a week and a half ago. It was a bittersweet time, but he was more than thrilled to board his bus for Parris Island!

-My family recently had photos done and for once, I wasn't behind the lens. If you're on facebook, you can view a bunch of them here.

-I also started school this week, which is exciting (yes, I'm a nerd!). I have one year left (!!!) and I'm wondering where the time has gone. It seems like yesterday I was a freshman and terrified of setting foot on a college campus...and here I am, ready to finish and feeling a tad sad. I am still seriously considering graduate school because I love learning so much. However, we'll have to see where God leads!

-With the beginning of school also comes cross-country season! I have already been training for the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon, so practice hasn't been too rough ;) I'm pretty excited for this season because I'm the historian, which means I get to document everything through photos! Yipee!

Well, not quite yet. Tuesday morning I fly off to Colorado and I'll be gone for a while. I'll definitely be snapping lots of pictures, but posting will probably be non-existent. For now, I'll leave you with a few photos from today. I went out with my friend Sarah and we wandered around Ann Arbor experimenting on each other. Overall, it went well. But, I was slightly disappointed with myself. I'm really trying to work on developing more poses that are natural but still unique. I was happy with the edit job, however. I'm still getting used to Lightroom and using presets and so far, it has been fun. I've also included some architectural photos because I LOVE the University of Michigan campus :) Sarah also took lots of photos of ME, which was SO weird. I kept analyzing myself the ENTIRE time. And I was so conscious of the lighting. And standing there was so awkward. I definitely prefer being the photographer!

Greenfield Village

I am a nanny again this summer, so I took the kids to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. Dearborn is a special place to me, because I attend school there and love the community. It's also a city filled with history. Henry Ford has estate on my campus and Ford Motor Co. was started and still has its world headquarters there. Greenfield Village is actually part of a sprawling campus that includes an academy, a museum, a theatre and the village - all named after Henry Ford. It's pretty neat! If you're ever in the Detroit area, I'd recommend checking it out!

Well, today was an exciting day, to say the least. I came home from work, to find a neat little bundle with my address on it. To my surprise, it was my business cards! I feel so legit now. When my graphic designer (thanks Maddy!) initially sent me the first design, I was REALLY skeptical. I had given her some colors and let her go because honestly, I never would have figured out a design. When I opened the box and saw the cards, I immediately fell in love. I booked a flight to Denver, Colorado.

I didn’t want to spend the money, but Popsie said this will probably be the last time our family is all together like this, with my two brothers in the Marine Corps now. I’m trusting God on this one despite the hole in my wallet; I know it’s the right decision.

On my way there, I’ll visit my dear friend, Hannah F. during a layover.

Then I’ll make the connection, land in Denver and hang out with Katie and (another) Hannah.

After, I’ll spend the next week with family.

I’m SO thrilled about leaving on a jet plane. The roar of the engines. Popping ears and the frantic smacking of bubble gum. Seeing the Lakes from the air. People-watching in the plane. Observing the cloud formations in the sky. Imagining the pictures, the mountains and the people I'll see.

Perhaps I’ll end the trip two hundred dollars richer.

Life is good. Summer is here and I have started working, which means I have finally fallen into a routine. This weekend is also my brother's graduation party and everything for the last two weeks has built up to it. Decorations, food, tents, chairs, invites, senior pictures, assembling picture boards, hanging pictures, painting walls, hanging curtains, cleaning the yard...the list is endless. But it will all be over Monday morning and we can relax again.

I have several more shoots in the next two weeks. Very excited about this, however, I am still trying to sort many things through. Previously, I had planned on expanding my photography business and openly advertising for it (currently, I do business via word of mouth). However, I received several academic opportunities for the summer and beyond (opportunities that could take me away from Michigan for a while). This is caused me to pause and think about running a photography business a bit more before I rush into it. I know that I love photography, but I'm not sure this is the right time to pursue this endeavor.

Have any other photographers ever come to a crossroad like this? Advice would be appreciated :)

I love it when I keep in touch with high schoolers. Maybe it makes me feel young again. Hah. Years back, I participated in youth orchestra where I met Adora. Even though I have been graduated for several years now, we have still stayed in contact. Awesome. She received a full ride to college and will be studying broadcast journalism. Watch out people - she's gonna rock in the media! Adora also plays trumpet and can draw cartoons like its nobody's business. She even drew a cartoon of me taking pictures. How cool is that?! I just love this girl!

I've been blogging here for several years now and I've nearly used up all the photo bandwidth I'm allowed. This has caused me to think about where my business and this blog are headed. I have lots of new ideas and photos to share, but time and blog space don't permit me to at this time. Hopefully this summer I'll work towards launching a website with my own domain. I'm really excited! For now, posting will be lighter here and I will be sharing more shoots on Facebook, so follow me there if you wish. I don't plan on using it exclusively, but you will probably see more content there while I begin working on my new website :)

I'm also in the process of obtaining a permanent second shooter, which is also exciting! Stay tuned for details!!

Arabic food!

As most of you know, I'm a student at the University of Michigan where I study sociology and the Middle East. I have intense love for the Arabic language, the culture and best of all-their food! Tonight I made some fattoush and flat bread. Fattoush is an Arabic salad filled with various veggies and herbs; I love it. I've created my own variation, but it's still similar to the others.

This was my first time trying my own pita recipe and it turned out awesome, especially for this culinary-challenged person! For dinner, I enjoyed pita bread, lathered with hummus (I'm going to try my hand at making this next) and fattoush on top. Yummy!

I don't think I've mentioned this before, but my brother is in the Marine Corps. Well, technically, not quite yet. He leaves in mid-August to complete his boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. He'll be gone for three months and then ship off somewhere to a base in the US. Then....who knows! It has been so weird thinking he has only a few months left here at home.

my other brother is getting ready to graduate from high school in June. He's already taken one year of college classes as a senior, so he he's got a nice head start. I have no idea what he wants to pursue in the future, but I think it has to do with some newfangled engineering thing. You could call him the Family Clown. I will be blogging his senior shots hopefully soon. I am dreadfully behind...

our American Girl

One of my favorite toys growing up was my American Girl doll, Samantha. Elaina has inherited my doll and both of my sisters, but currently, she has been constantly asking for "her own doll straight from the store". Of course! Imagine her surprise when the American Girl Doll of the Year was a pretty, blonde doll named...Lanie, which is Elaina's nickname (we refer to her with both names, but Lanie is more frequently used). My parents purchased her the matching outfit to the doll, which has only increased the demands for the doll. Because, of course, the matching outfit is only half of the package, Mom and Dad. Unfortunately for the poor girl, she'll just have to keep whining until her seventh birthday in September. I think she'll be pleasantly surprised and very happy!

Yes, it's true. I love shoes. This picture is actually for another project I'm working on, but I liked it so much, I had to share :) What types of shoes are your favorites? Heels? Flats? Tennies? Do you like ones with patterned designs (zebra stripes, floral pattern, etc), flowers or other embellishments? Since I'm on the taller side, I am not a fan of heels, but I do own several pairs and wear them sometimes. Flats of any style are probably my favorites. If they have different patterns or embellishments, even better!

My apologies for disappearing. Things have been absolutely crazy - I returned to school this week. Seven more weeks of classes and then SUMMER. Speaking of summer, the weather has been beautiful here! Mid-fifties, sunny and breezy. I love it. Unfortunately, I have been very sick with who knows what. I have been drinking a ton of tea and resting (when I can). If my symptoms last for another day or two, I will be going to the doctor.

All that to say, I am behind in blogging and moderating comments, so bear with me!

Okay, I have a confession to make. I have been addicted to the Olympics which is why I haven't been posting or taking pictures. Seriously, it sounds absurd but it's true. When I wasn't busy writing 35 page research papers on Middle Eastern diasporas, I was in front of the TV or the computer keeping up with scores. I am beyond crazy when it comes to the Olympics, especially the winter games. I discovered this year that I actually enjoy Curling. And I found it so awesomely cool that the gold and silver medalists for Ice Dancing train less than 5 minutes from my house. How cool is that?! Okay, so I'm weird but whatever. Now that the games have ended, maybe I will get back into blogging ;)

Some of you asked to see the big ice cave my brother built earlier this week, so I'm stealing my sister's pictures. (Told you I was serious - I was too busy watching the Olympics to get pictures!) Pretty cool, huh?

Snow Day #2

The midwest (or at least this part of Michigan) has been dumped with another bucket of snow. We're slated to get 5-8 inches and it's still coming down pretty hard. Surprisingly, my school closed for the day! Yipee! I have a major exam tomorrow, so the extra time to study has been so nice.

I've been doing some housekeeping here at the blog and have added a new page for packages. I'm taking baby-steps to start promoting my business and it's exciting. I've also added three new super, crafty bloggers to my blogroll. They have given me so much inspiration for different projects, so check them out!

in my spare time, i've been watching and keeping up with this.

I also had a birthday. Yesterday. But I was too busy sitting in classes or working to post anything. I am now an old woman...of twenty-one years. The most exciting thing about this birthday? I got a new driver's license, which meant a new picture. I love my new picture. I don't look like a zombie anymore. And that's about it. I promise to try and keep up the blogging. I have some exciting shoots to share :)

I have a confession to make: I love tea more than I love coffee. Don't get me wrong, the smell of coffee is amazing, but the taste is horrid and in addition, the side-effects that people claim it has, somehow bypass me. I am known to konk out after having a cup of coffee (when I drink it, that is). Anyways, all that to say: I love tea and I think everyone should try the new Starbucks tea flavors. So amazing!

I also LOVE that they changed their cups for Valentines Day! Actually, I'm not a fan of Valentines Day, I just think it's cool to see something artsy on my cup. I ended up with a heart, but I saw others with hand-drawn cupids. Pretty neat, huh? I love seeing random art in the most unexpected places!

i've always wanted to try a magnifying glass picture. this isn't exactly what I had in mind, but it's not bad. personally, i think it needs to be more focused on the eye and with less glare. at the time, i didn't think to remove the glasses, but that would probably make the photo better and easier. thoughts?

Along with cookies, brownies are a big weakness for me. Unfortunately due to health issues, I'm really not allowed to eat them. Today I broke down and couldn't resist. My sister made a batch of these and they disappeared within 24 hours, but somehow, someone left a tiny little piece left. How could I resist?! The poor brownie was just sitting there...I'm almost positive it was calling my name.

While we're on the topic of food, I thought I'd share some other random food photos I've taken in the past few months.
